Dragonfly Pursuit

Dragonflies are special to me. I’m fascinated by them, not just because they are shimmery and come in pretty colors, but because of their life history. Dragonfly nymphs develop in dark, stinky, cold, unpleasant place. Furthermore, dragonfly nymphs are ugly! They are not pretty like their adult counterparts. In fact, when I used to study them under the microscope back in the ‘80’s, I thought they would make good prototypes for movie monsters.

So what makes me love and admire an ugly duckling that starts its life in such a depressing place?

Because the circumstances I’ve described are not the end of the story, just the prequel. One day the nymph makes the decision to change. It proceeds to swim into the light, breaks open that hideous shell that binds him and emerges as a glittering, lighter than air creation.

My soul is no different than that dragonfly nymph. I too had to make a decision to leave what was safe and familiar and swim towards the light. That choice to seek light, not darkness, enabled the ugly monstrous shell around my soul to break open..

This necklace, like its insect counterparts, burst forth from a dark place. It was created in 2017. I had broken my wrist the summer before and when the cast was removed I could not use my wrist. If I persevered and used my wrist, it would swell up and the pain was horrible. I thought my days of creating jewelry were over. Then I was finally referred to a hand specialist who instantly knew what the problem was and he worked his magic and within a few weeks I was able to work mine.
